One Night, Thousands of Stories

The 2025 K-Count identified 5,789 people experiencing homelessness across the Commonwealth on a single night, including 1,998 unsheltered, 3,159 in emergency shelter, and 632 in transitional housing.

Poverty remains a major challenge

The Census Bureau’s QuickFacts page reports that 15.6% of Kentuckians lived in poverty during the 2020–2024 period.

Water and plumbing access are another overlooked hardship

Kentucky’s state page in the (Dis)closing the Water Gap dashboard reports 7,259 households lacking complete plumbing facilities, or 0.41% of households. The Census defines complete plumbing as hot and cold running water, a flush toilet, and a tub or shower.

For children and families, the impact is especially serious

Kentucky schools identified 22,434 students experiencing homelessness during the 2024–2025 school year.

So Much More Than Statistics

These numbers represent neighbors, children, parents, and individuals who deserve safety, dignity, and support.

Kentucky residents in poverty: 15.6%

Kentuckians counted as homeless in the 2025 K-Count: 5,789

Kentucky households lacking complete plumbing facilities: 7,259

Need In Our Region

Student homelessness data reflects school-aged children identified by the Kentucky Department of Education. Boyd County includes multiple school districts, and totals are presented as a combined estimate. Households lacking complete plumbing facilities refers to homes without hot and cold running water, a sink, and a bath or shower, based on U.S. Census housing measures.

Serving Our Rural Neighbors

Across the counties we serve, many individuals and families face overlapping challenges related to poverty, housing instability, and limited access to basic resources.

In Bath County alone, over 22% of residents live below the poverty level, while similar trends are seen across Carter, Rowan, Montgomery, and Boyd counties. School data further reflects this need, with dozens of students in each county identified as experiencing homelessness each year. In addition, some households continue to lack complete plumbing facilities, highlighting gaps in access to basic living conditions.

These realities are often less visible in rural communities, where need is spread out and harder to reach. Moving Forward with Hope exists to bridge that gap by delivering services directly into communities, restoring dignity, and creating pathways toward stability.
